We publish a monthly Program Calendar to publicize our activities and programs. Our services are open to any senior age 55 and older.
The Sarah’s Circle wellness center is a safe space for seniors to spend their days participating in group programs, socializing with friends new and old, and working with our staff to address the challenges they may be facing toward continued self-sufficiency. Our day program provides a respite from loneliness or boredom for hundreds of local seniors.
Exploring the arts is one of the best ways that seniors can continue to expand their minds. We host watercolor class every Monday at 1:00pm and monthly arts and crafts sessions to challenge our seniors to express themselves through the visual arts. We have also recently begun a crochet workshop facilitated by two of our talented residents, offering participants the opportunity to create beautiful objects while learning a new skill with friends.
This year, we introduced a new poetry writing workshop in partnership with the Sanctuary Theatre and The DC Poetry Project, Inc. Led by Dr. Michael Ingram and Michael Oliver, participants had the opportunity to write their own poems and discuss various creative writing themes in a group session. This creative outlet allowed seniors to talk about their lives through their own words. Many touched on deeply personal topics including fears, injustice, disenfranchisement, and loss.
On September 26th, the participants in the poetry workshop performed their work before a live audience of more than 50 Sarah’s Circle residents, friends, and supporters. A highlight video of the event is available to view for those who could not join us in person.
The poetry seminar meets every second and fourth Thursday at 1:00pm and will culminate in a live performance in the fall of 2014.
