ABOUT US

Sarah’s Circle is an award-winning affordable housing residence and community center providing comprehensive services for low-income seniors. We were founded in 1983 by a group of luminaries, local and national political and business leaders, and community activists who had a collective vision for a supportive home where older adults on fixed incomes could thrive independently and support one another in a safe and holistic environment.

In 2017, Sarah’s Circle embarked on the full gut renovation of our building, which was constructed in 1917 and was in need of modernization and significant safety upgrades. Funded in part by the federal Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program, our redevelopment project totaled more than $8 million in construction costs and resulted in reconfiguration of the building’s interior to add 15 new studio and one-bedroom units and a total redesign of all systems and fixtures. Who We Are

We range in age from late 50s to late 80s. Each month, we survive on incomes at or below 30 percent of area median income, which is currently just $25,500 per year for a single-person household.. Most of us live alone, having raised our families, suffered the loss of a spouse, and struggled to find our place in the world as we age. A few of us work part-time; many of us volunteer, contribute to our community through our congregations and local civic groups, and are proud to call ourselves DC residents. Some of us are veterans; many more are military spouses or parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents of members of our armed services. We represent every race and some of us come from as far away as Africa, Central America, and South America.

What We Do

Sarah’s Circle is based upon the philosophy that old age is alive with rich possibilities. Our goal is to equip our seniors with the tools they need to remain independent, aging in place in their own homes and enjoying all that life in diverse and vibrant DC has to offer.
